The Surrounding Area
This area on the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) is known as the Spanish Algarve and is as far South West of Spain as you can go. There are 13 long, wide and often deserted beaches on this Atlantic coastline where the sand is golden and fine. The beaches are backed by sand dunes and pine trees, there are no high rise hotels, apartment blocks or crowded beaches as found in other areas of Spain.
The 4 nearest beaches, 2 of which are in Portugal, are approximately 15-20 minutes away and Ayamonte town is only a 10 minute drive. Ayamonte is a lovely town, very Spanish with pleasant squares and pretty narrow pedestrianised streets in the centre. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, ice cream parlours, shops and supermarkets. It has an indoor market selling fresh fish, meat, fruit, vegetables and newly baked bread and in the square by the marina there is an outdoor market for clothes and jewellery. There is a ferry that runs regularly from Ayamonte over the River Guadiana to Villa Real de San Antonio in Portugal, it is less than a 10 minute journey and costs roughly €3 return. Walk round the marina in Villa Real, treat yourself to something from the market by the ferry terminal and saunter round the shops. You will come to a large cobbled square full of bars and restaurants where you could have a coffee and a cake then return to Spain for your evening meal.......remember there is one hour time difference between the two countries.
Take a trip inland alongside the River Guadiana on the Portuguese side past the riverside villages up to Alcoutim where you can have lunch and maybe take the short boat trip over the river to Sanlucar de Guadiana on the
Spanish side for an ice cream. Each town has castle ruins recalling the hostilities of years ago between the two nations but now they are separated only by the lazy blue
of the river.
If you don't want to just have a restful time around the house taking the occasional dip in the nearby communal

Golf - 5 courses very nearby, the nearest at Castro Marim, Portugal is only 5 minutes drive. The Spanish ones are Isla Canela, Islatilla, El Rompido & Neuvo Portil and the new golf course on Costa Esuri opposite the house.
